Choosing care for a loved one is rarely simple. For many families, it comes at a stressful time, after a fall, a hospital stay, or when they start to notice that day-to-day life is becoming harder to manage. In these moments, many care providers encourage you to make decisions quickly, with emotions running high and not always enough time to properly think things through.

But a short visit or conversation can only tell part of the story and doesn’t always reflect what life is really like day to day. Every day, we talk to families across the country who feel unsure, or worried about the care they have arranged for their loved one. Did they fully understand all the options? Does their family member feel comfortable with the care they are receiving? And, importantly, is the care actually adapting to their needs and preferences?

That’s why we’ve created Smart Start. It gives you and your loved one time, space and support to figure things out properly. Over 2 or 4 weeks, one of our experienced care workers provides support at home, helping us understand real needs while giving you the chance to see what care looks like in everyday life. This can be set up as a trial of our care services, or as a stepping stone to a space in one of our care homes nationwide.

It’s a calmer, more flexible way to explore care options. One without pressure, and without rushing into long-term decisions before you’re ready.

How Smart Start works

Smart Start is designed to be simple, clear, and supportive from the very beginning. Here’s how the process works, step by step, so you know exactly what to expect and how we’ll support you and your loved one along the way.

Smart Start is designed to do more than provide care; it’s there to make a difficult time feel more manageable. Alongside support at home, we help with the practical and emotional challenges that often come with changing care needs, from daily routines through to planning a potential move into a care home. Whether you need hands-on help, guidance, or simply someone to take the pressure off, Smart Start is there to support you and your family every step of the way.

Who is Smart Start for?

Smart Start is designed for people and families who are facing important care decisions but need more time, support, and real-life understanding before choosing the right path. It’s especially helpful when situations are changing quickly, or when there is uncertainty about whether home care or a care home is the best option.

Smart Start is ideal for:

  • Families who need time and space to make the right care decision without pressure
  • Older adults considering a move into a care home but wanting to experience care first
  • People recently discharged from hospital who still need support at home
  • Individuals following a catastrophic injury or sudden health event
  • Those experiencing a rapid decline in mobility, confidence, or daily living ability
  • Families unsure what level of care is needed or what support would be most appropriate
  • Anyone wanting a clearer, real-world understanding of care before committing long-term
  • People preparing practically and emotionally for a transition into residential care

When June lost her husband in April 2025, she was determined to remain in the family home they had shared for decades. With support from her daughter and son-in-law, who visited regularly to help with shopping and appointments, she managed day to day life. However, her mobility was declining and her dementia had progressed significantly over the previous year.

In March, her daughter gently raised the idea of a care home, and they visited a nearby Agincare home together. It was an emotional experience, with June struggling to imagine leaving her home and memories behind, while the family recognised that her increasing needs were becoming difficult to manage alongside work and family life.

Rather than rushing a decision, Agincare recommended Smart Start. A care worker moved into June’s home for four weeks, providing round-the-clock support and companionship. This helped June adjust gradually, rebuild confidence, and feel less isolated after losing her husband.

When she later revisited the care home with her care worker, her perspective had shifted. She enjoyed meeting residents and taking part in activities, and chose to move in. Agincare reserved a room for her and extended Smart Start for a further two weeks to support her transition and help her prepare her home for sale.

With her care worker, June sorted through a lifetime of belongings, turning what could have been an overwhelming task into a reflective and reassuring process.

Today, June is thriving in her new home, enjoying an active social life, regular visits from her family, and the support she needs while staying connected to the memories that matter most.

FAQs about Smart Start

Smart Start is a short-term live-in care service that provides full-time support in your own home. It is designed to give individuals and families time, space, and reassurance when facing changes in health, mobility, or living arrangements. It bridges the gap between needing additional help and making a longer-term care decision.

Smart Start is usually arranged for an initial period of a few weeks, but it is flexible depending on individual needs. The length of support can be extended if more time is needed to recover, adjust, or decide on the next step. The focus is always on providing care at a pace that feels right for you.

It is suitable for a wide range of situations, including people recovering after a hospital stay, those experiencing a gradual decline in health or mobility, or individuals who are considering a move into a care home but are not yet ready to commit. It is also helpful for families who need immediate support while longer-term arrangements are being explored.

A trained live-in care worker provides 24-hour support tailored to individual needs. This can include personal care such as washing and dressing, help with medication, meal preparation, light household tasks, and companionship. The aim is to maintain independence while ensuring safety, comfort, and reassurance at home.
