Care home Admiralty in Gillingham impart their sage advice during Mental Health week.

June 1, 2026

Residents and team members at our Admiralty Care Home came together to recognise Mental Health Awareness Week through a thoughtful and supportive wellbeing session centred around open conversation, emotional support, and community connection.

Led by Activity Coordinator Denise Webb, the session gave residents the opportunity to discuss their mental health in both one-to-one and group settings, encouraging honest conversations in a safe and welcoming environment. Residents shared personal experiences, positive coping strategies, and advice on how others can support their own mental wellbeing.

Serenity in every space

One of the strongest themes to emerge from the discussions was the importance of spending time outdoors, with many residents advising others to “go to the park” or enjoy fresh air as a way to improve mood and reduce stress. This message closely reflects the environment created at Admiralty, where the light and spacious surroundings, along with thoughtfully designed bedrooms – which bring the outdoors in – create a calm and uplifting atmosphere for residents every day.

Denise said:

The support, honesty, and kindness shown by residents today was truly inspiring, something as simple as a chat, natural light, spending time outdoors, or sharing a moment with others can make a real difference to someone’s wellbeing.

Collectively, centuries of lived experience surely give the residents’ voices a special, timeless  significance, a reminder that no matter our age or stage in life, kindness, understanding, and connection remain at the heart of wellbeing.

A listening ear

The importance of conversation and companionship was also highlighted throughout the session. Residents spoke positively about how regular chats and a listening ear can create unlikely yet lasting friendships, especially between fellow residents and team members resulting in a significant impact on emotional wellbeing and reducing feelings of loneliness.  Admiralty’s lounge areas play a valuable role in encouraging these everyday social interactions, accommodating residents in several comfortable and interchangeable spaces.

During the activity, Denise recorded residents’ supportive messages and wellbeing advice on whiteboards and sticky notes, which were later brought together to create a “frame of support” symbolising unity, kindness, and encouragement throughout the home.

From Talk to Support

Residents responded positively to the session, with many appreciating the opportunity to express their feelings and support one another. The success of the activity has inspired Admiralty to introduce a weekly “Coffee and Chat” morning, providing residents with a regular opportunity to discuss mental health and wellbeing while helping team members identify anyone who may benefit from additional one-to-one support.

All at Admiralty hope the positive words and shared experiences from Mental Health Awareness Week will continue to encourage others to seek support, spend time connecting with nature, and recognise the value of social connection and open conversation.

As the conversations continue beyond this week, the community at Admiralty hopes their stories will inspire many more moments of reflection, support, and togetherness still to come.
