St Peter’s Park Care Home & Retirement Village

St Peter’s Park Care Home in Bexhill, East Sussex

St Peter’s Park Care Home and Retirement Village (formerly known as Peterhouse Care and Nursing Home), is a real home-from-home in the East Sussex seaside town of Bexhill. Our experienced staff provide high-quality, affordable nursing, residential, dementia, end of life, respite and convalescence care.

Our retirement village is different. As well as our nursing and residential care home we have 34 sheltered housing flats and cottages.

We really do have something for everyone, to suit a range of different needs and tastes on our beautiful site. Our aim is for everyone to feel part of a real community.

We understand that families have real concerns over the safety of residents at this time and would like to provide reassurance that we are doing everything in our power to minimise the risk of our residents getting COVID-19.

Our care home visiting policy is based on a strict protocol and risk assessment that take into account the individual circumstances of each home.

Call us on 01424 730 809 to arrange a visit or an informal chat, we’d love to introduce you to the home, our staff and our residents.

Where is St Peter’s Park?

St Peter’s Park is in Bexhill Old Town, not far from Eastbourne, Hastings, Battle and St Leonards in East Sussex.

We’re tucked behind St. Peter’s Church, and the seafront is a 10-minute walk away. It’s easy to reach us – we’re on a bus route and just a seven-minute walk from the station.

Residential and nursing care wing

We want all our residents to feel that St Peter’s Park is home. That’s why our communal rooms are furnished to be comfortable and welcoming, not clinical.

Our lounges, dining rooms and residents’ bar mean there’s plenty of space for group activities. If you want some company, there’s always someone to talk to, and to have a coffee with in the lounge.

But there are also plenty of quieter spots of you want to spend some time by yourself.

The care wing has bedrooms on the ground floor and the first floor. We have ground floor rooms with direct access to the garden or our courtyard. Our first floor is fully accessible, by stairs or a lift.

The bedrooms at our Bexhill care home

Some of our rooms have en-suites. The rooms without en-suites have accessible toilets within easy reach.

The bedrooms are a blank canvas for our residents to personalise with their own photos, pictures and furniture. Personal possessions help residents feel at home, and provide extra stimulation and time for reminiscence. They also give our staff an important understanding of a resident’s history and what’s important to them.

Unusually for a care home, all the bedrooms in our care wing have their own outside space, whether that’s a balcony or a terrace. There’s room for pots, a table and chairs.

Sheltered housing

The sheltered housing studio flats and one-bedroom cottages are for our more independent residents. Each has its own bathroom and kitchen, and the cottages have separate lounges, too.

The flats and cottages offer more self-contained space, but as part of the St Peter’s Park community their residents can still make the most of our communal facilities such as:

  • Lounge with bar, for relaxing and enjoying drinks and snacks with friends
  • Beautiful dining room where home cooked meals are served
  • Use of communal laundry
  • Regular entertainment, exercise and flower arranging classes
  • Minibus with twice weekly excursions into town for shopping
  • Occasional other trips out in the mini-bus (some of which may incur a small charge), such as visits to local garden centres or for lunch
  • Evening entertainment such as bingo and cards
  • Pitch and putt course
  • Nurses from the care home are there as good neighbours

Residents and visitors are welcome to use the free St Peter’s Park Wi-Fi. All our care homes have an iPad for residents to use – Skype calls work really well – and for families to use when they visit.

Visitors often bring in their own devices and use our Wi-Fi to show loved ones videos and photos, and to play games. And our Wi-Fi has proved very popular with the children of visiting families!

Our retirement village gardens

We’re very proud of the attractive and spacious enclosed grounds surrounding St Peter’s Park.

Our wildlife garden is award-winning, and that’s testament to the hard work of our full-time gardener. He’s happy to share his experience and learn from residents too, during garden walks and talks.

Residents love to spend time pottering in the garden – it’s a really lovely place. And if putting, rather than pottering, is your thing, you’ll love our nine-hole putting green. Putters and balls are available for anyone to borrow, if you want to get in some practice for our annual golf competition!

Staff at our Bexhill care home

Lisa Turner is the registered manager of St Peter’s Park:

St Peter’s Park is unlike other care homes. There’s a different atmosphere here, with a really interesting and stimulating mix of residents, right across the care home and independent living flats and cottages. I’d recommend coming to visit to see for yourself what it’s like.

We’re so lucky that many of our staff have worked here for many years. We’ve got a great core team – friendly, kind and patient – exactly what you need to care for people.

Staff training

All our staff go on an intensive three-day Agincare training course before starting at St Peter’s Park.

As well as regular reviews and supervisions we carry out mandatory annual and two-year refresher training, plus specialist training including subjects such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, stroke and Parkinson’s.

We really value the strong relationships we’ve developed with our local GP surgeries, hospice and at home nurses.

Social activities

We have our own activities co-ordinator who works with people in the care wing. She spends time with residents in their own rooms and organises the group activities.

Our activity schedule is varied. There’s something for everyone to enjoy:

  • Entertainers
  • Arts and crafts
  • Puzzles
  • Coffee mornings
  • Pet therapy
  • Cooking and eating!

We also get out and about as much as we can, in the care wing minibus. There’s a weekly trip down to the seafront (which is a favourite), and shopping trips, too.

The care wing has a hair salon, and a local hairdresser comes in weekly. We also have regular chiropodist and optician visits.

Being part of the local community is important to us, so the people we care for are connected, not isolated.

We’re very close to St. Peter’s Church, and volunteers come once a month to give communion to those residents who want to take part. There’s also a lovely carol service at Christmas.

Food and nutrition

Good, wholesome home-cooked food is essential at a care home. Our two excellent chefs cook with locally-sourced ingredients as much as possible. We cater for all dietary needs, from Coeliac and gluten-free, to vegetarian and vegan.

New menus always go before our residents for comment, at the bi-monthly residents’ meetings. Our kitchen staff have received a 5* ‘Very Good’ rating from the Food Standards Agency.

We serve three main meals a day and mealtimes are really important. We encourage our residents to eat together as there are so many social and nutritional benefits.

However, people can choose to eat their meals in private too, if they prefer. We re-offer before serving, to check our residents haven’t changed their minds about what they’d like to eat.

Tea/coffee, biscuits and cakes are served morning and afternoon, and there are always other snacks available.

What our residents, their family and friends say about St Peter's Park

I have been here for almost one year in a flat which I rent. I am extremely happy here and feel safe at all times. I cannot fault the service, kindness and general way of life. The staff are super, very attentive, there is also a lot of laughter, and great generosity.

Joan S – Resident

My mother has recently been admitted into nursing care at Peterhouse. The staff have made a difficult situation so much easier every step of the way. Thank you

Linda B – Daughter of Resident

I was received into Peterhouse at short notice for respite care having sprained my ankle. The care standard was excellent with very friendly and competent staff. Every need was attended to quickly and the food was also very good. I would definitely recommend Peterhouse for long-term or respite care.

Mary R – Resident

I’ve been here for very satisfying respite care, which I have received abundantly with maximum kindness from all departments.

Response to CQC report

Tim Buckley, Chief Operating Officer of Agincare Homes Holdings

St. Peter’s Park is a lovely place to live. It always makes me proud when inspectors tell us how kind and caring our team are, and that goes for all the team, from care workers through to maintenance and our chefs. They all genuinely care about our residents, which is exactly how it should be.

The team have responded to the CQC’s recommendations under the leadership of our newly appointed Home Manager Lisa Turner who has joined us since this inspection.

Lisa with her wealth of experience has quickly made the required improvements, building on our strong foundations, encouraging and supporting people to lead full lives, whilst being as active as they can be.

Our team take the time to get to know our residents, working with both residents, families and health professionals to be supportive and respectful.“I have no doubt that together with Lisa at the helm, the St Peter’s Park team will go from strength to strength.
