Nightingale Care and Nursing Home in Derby

Nightingale Care and Nursing Home offers four weeks care FREE

We are welcoming new residents with a special offer – the first four weeks of care completely free*.

Nightingale Care & Nursing Home in Sunny Hill, Derby, is now open after a full refurbishment and restoration.

Our home provides high-quality residential, nursing, end-of-life and palliative care for older people with dementia.

We have a wealth of specialist experience of caring for people with mixed care and nursing needs. At Nightingale, we don’t label people. We treat everyone as an individual. As their needs change, so do the level and type of care they receive from us. Nightingale is their home.

Our home is well-connected to the local community with a bus stop right outside, three parks at an easy walking distance, and the Royal Derby Hospital just a 10 minute drive away.

As well as caring for our residents we care about their families too. We don’t have set visiting times, and our door is always open for a chat. We also have a quarterly residents’ and families’ forum and listen to feedback and suggestions.

About our home

We’ve created a relaxed and homely environment for all our residents. On the ground floor we have a large lounge with TV and plenty of room for activities, with two additional lounges on the first floor.

Our lounges are a good spot for quieter activities and reminiscing. We’ve gathered lots of objects to stimulate memories and conversations, including books, records, old magazines and memorabilia.

Residents and visitors are welcome to use the free Nightingale Wi-Fi. All our care homes have an iPad for residents to use – Skype calls work really well – and for families to use when they visit.

The bedrooms

Following a large investment, the home has undergone exciting development work, and a complete, state-of-the-art refurbishment. We are delighted that Nightingale is open and registered for 59 residents in total.

53 of our bedrooms have en-suite facilities, and all rooms have accessible bathrooms nearby.

Many of the bedrooms look out onto the garden, and most of our ground-floor bedrooms have direct garden access.

We encourage residents to personalise their rooms with their own photos and furniture. Personal possessions help residents feel at home, and provide extra stimulation and time for reminiscence.

The garden

We have a lovely garden with level lawns at the front of the house, and another secure and enclosed one at the back of the home. There are planters and beds for flowers and vegetables, plus plenty of room to sit out and enjoy the sunshine.

Our residents love to watch the wildlife in the garden, or simply enjoy a cup of tea with visiting loved ones.

Staff training

All our staff go on an intensive three-day Agincare induction and training before starting at Nightingale and we also have have excellent support from our local GPs and district nurses.

Social activities

We like to be sociable. Our residents love having animals to visit, including pets and more exotic creatures.

Singing and dancing are favourite activities at Nightingale, with regular singers performing a variety of music.

We pick and choose activities enjoy from a long list of ideas from pottery and bingo to trips out to the local parks and shops are a firm favourite.

Food and nutrition

Good, wholesome home-cooked food is essential at a care & nursing home. Our cooks prepare traditional and seasonal meals and always ask for feedback from our residents. They are more than willing to adapt menus and go out of their way to ensure there is something for everyone. Our kitchen staff are regularly reviewed by the Food Standards Agency to ensure only the best for our residents.

Mealtimes are really important to us. We encourage our residents to eat together as there are so many social and nutritional benefits. However, people can choose to eat their meals in private too, if they prefer.

We have picture and written menus, but we always re-offer before serving, to check our residents haven’t changed their minds about what they’d like to eat.

What residents, family and friends say about Nightingale Care and Nursing Home

Everyone made us and Mum really welcome, home is smart, clean and well furnished. The staff are lovely, all introduced themselves to us, can’t do enough for us. Really happy with the home. Car park accessible.

Ann N (Daughter of Resident)

Very friendly and helpful staff at Nightingale. They visited and assessed my father-in-law in hospital and accommodated a move to suit us because we don’t live local. The home is newly refurbished and very nice. We were all welcomed when we arrived and felt very at ease with everyone. A very positive experience, my father in law will be very happy.

D E (Daughter in law of Resident)

I first went to view the Nightingale in June and was immediately impressed with the condition of the building and how friendly the staff were. My Mum only lived there for six months due to her passing. The staff were helpful and friendly, and nothing was too much trouble. The staff always kept us informed if there were any issues.  My Mum made some close friends and absolutely loved her time there. I wouldn’t have chosen anywhere else for her to stay.

Phillip A (Son of Resident)

The utmost care was given to my mum-in-law in the short time she was in the Nightingale. She was happy and content in the knowledge she was being so very well looked after. As a family, we were kept informed every step of the way, i.e. if she was unwell or the staff had any concerns. The atmosphere in the home is very happy, and the staff are all approachable. They are all our guardian angels. Thank you for everything.

Glenda A (Daughter-in-law of Resident)

Regulated by the Care Quality Commission

Response to a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC)

The wellbeing of our residents is our absolute priority, and we continue to work with the local authorities and NHS partners to reassure all stakeholders that safe care is being delivered to residents.

Whilst we accept that there were areas where the CQC found that the home fell short of our expected high quality at the time of inspection, we also continue to strongly challenge some of the evidence used as we do not consider it is a fair reflection on the service. We have lodged a factual accuracy submission and formal complaint to the CQC, and taken legal advice on this matter.

We are committed to delivering quality care, and this is constantly under review at Nightingale. We have implemented an intensive package of ongoing support and training which specifically addresses concerns highlighted by CQC, and includes strong support for the care home’s management team.

We were pleased that the inspectors noted in their report that people were generally supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way and in their best interests; and that the policies and systems in the service supported this practice. The report also noted that the service was clean, and that staff followed best infection prevention and control practice.

Our Foylebank Care Home, also in Derby and visited by CQC in the same month, has achieved a ‘Good’ rating, and this reflects the standards we strive for and deliver across all of our locations.
