The call to care is strong in Sydney

November 22, 2021

For our amazing home care worker Sydney the call to care is strong. But it was only when Covid struck that the realisation dawned, bringing a life changing moment, and a new home care job.

Like many others across the nation, Bristol bar and restaurant manager Sydney found her job put on ice when the pandemic struck.  It gave Sydney time to reflect, and space to think about what she really wanted from life. Sydney explains her journey to a home care job with Agincare:

“The Covid lockdown changed me as a person.  I decided I wanted a challenge, a proper job to progress my career and somewhere I could work my way up.

For Sydney care was in the heart, and her new home care job represented a roundabout return to her first experience of care as a 13 year old helping look after her Nan, whom was living with Parkinson’s.

The 14 or 15 year old me would have said no-way and never to a career in care, but I’m a natural carer and it’s my motivation in life. It’s perfect for me, and no day is the same.

All our care workers come from very different walks of life, but all have one thing in common – the heart to care.

Care is not what people think it is. You grow a bond with people you support. You see them on a regular basis, know their routine and spend time with them.  I care for them  in  the way I would want my grandparents to be cared for.

Sydney hasn’t looked back since following the call to care and making the switch from hospitality, she says:

I love my job more than anything.  I feel like it has changed me as a person.  It’s so rewarding, you can really make a difference to people’s lives.

I applied for a few care jobs but the process wasn’t great, and then I saw Agincare on Facebook and applied via Indeed. It was a quick and easy process all the way through, with a phone interview, checks, training and fast start to work.

Sydney can see a clear route to developing her career in the future with Agincare.

My manager is really good, takes care of you and makes sure you are looked after. Every day I am learning new techniques and different skills, and making friends.

I have ambitions and hope to develop and get more training as a support worker to go out and help people with person centred care.

The call to care is strong in Sydney, and to anyone thinking of a career in care she says:

I would say give it a go, you would be very surprised. Not every day is a walk in the park. It’s the most challenging job I have ever had, but also the most rewarding.
