Peter and Joan have been married for over fifty years and have two children. Half a century later, still very much in love, Joan developed dementia and was being cared for at home by her husband, who himself lives with Parkinson’s Disease.
Sadly, a dangerous fall left Peter in hospital, and Joan struggled to manage at home alone. With support from social services, Joan eventually came to live with Agincare at one of our care homes in Buckinghamshire, where we provide specialist support for people living with dementia.
On arrival, Joan required significant support with personal care, confidence, and emotional reassurance, particularly as she worried for Peter, who was still in hospital.
After a period of rehabilitation, Peter chose to join Joan at the home, as the injuries from his fall had affected his mobility and ability to live independently. With encouragement and support from the Agincare team, Joan and Peter have put the worst behind them.
The couple are reunited and living under the same roof, choosing separate suites at the home. Joan enjoys breakfast with staff assistance before joining Peter in the bright, airy residential lounge, spending the day together without the pressures that once made their lives difficult, returning to their own rooms after supper.
Joan and Peter, together with their son, have expressed how happy they are to spend their days together. Agincare staff encourage Joan to walk short distances throughout the day to maintain mobility, while offering verbal reassurance, compassion, and patience to reduce anxiety. Peter is also supported to remain as independent as possible. He says he finally feels that he and his wife are safe and cared for.
Their son shares in their relief and loves seeing his parents holding hands, free of worry, and engaging in care home activities together. This enduring couple, along with their family, now enjoy a revived sense of freedom, joy, and security, a priceless feeling that the Agincare team works around the clock to create and maintain.
Peter and Joan’s story reflects the heart of what Agincare stands for; compassionate, person-centred care that keeps families together and restores quality of life. By providing expert dementia and residential support, our team has helped them rediscover comfort, safety, and companionship in a warm, homely environment. Their renewed independence and peace of mind show how Agincare’s dedicated approach not only meets care needs but also nurtures love, dignity, and togetherness for every couple and family we support.
