Kevin has autism, right-sided weakness, and echolalia. He communicates using certain phrases that are meaningful to him but not always understood by others. He uses a wheelchair and requires 24-hour care to live independently within the community.
Before being supported by Ambient, now part of Agincare, Kevin rarely ventured out, having been surrounded by the attitude that “he can’t” or “he won’t be able to cope.” This limited his opportunities and kept the door closed on a bigger, brighter life. His behaviours remained challenging, and he often refused to leave his home or enter new environments.
The team made informed choices about Kevin’s care plan, redefining how his needs had been approached in the past and filling it with opportunities for growth, happiness, choice, and independence. Their intensely personalised support, combined with patience, compassion, and determination, began to make a real difference.
Slowly at first, the team introduced Kevin to activities in the community, and each time his behaviours became less challenging. He started to enjoy new experiences and looked forward to each day. Support workers helped him understand that leaving his comfort zone was worth the risk and that life is about experiencing new things, with staff always by his side.
This built Kevin’s confidence so much that in October 2019, he was able to go on his first holiday. The team researched and planned the trip, which became a breakthrough moment in his life.
A year ago, Kevin was almost housebound and fearful of leaving his front door. Now, he attends parties, visits family, and takes part in his favourite activities every day.
The team leader who supported Kevin said:
“All the staff are so proud. There was so much fun and laughter on the holiday and that has continued now we are back at home. Going on this trip was the best thing we could have done and is a perfect example of the impact care makes to people’s lives.”
Kevin’s story demonstrates the life-changing impact of Agincare’s personalised, 24-hour community support.
