Live-in care work is a brand new experience – Debbie’s story…

October 19, 2021

Live-in care work with Agincare suits Debbie Grice down to the ground.

She’s already clocked up over 20 years in the care industry, so is very well-placed to know what good care looks like. From working in care homes and children’s homes to supporting people in their own homes and being a senior carer, Debbie has pretty much been there, done that and got the t-shirt.

But a job as a live-in care worker was a brand new experience for Debbie when she joined Agincare. She’s not alone in that, for a lot of people live-in care is a new concept in care. Other types of care, such as residential care and nursing homes or home care, are much more familiar.

What is live in care work?

Live-in care sees a carefully matched care worker come to live-in a client’s home, and be on hand to support them in exactly the way they need it. This all helps provide peace of mind for them, their family and loved ones.

Debbie was working at a care home in her native Liverpool when she spotted an advert on Facebook for a live-in care job with Agincare. She thought it sounded interesting and decided to follow her own career advice:

Throughout my career when working with young ones starting out their career, or when I’ve been interviewing people for jobs, I’ve always encouraged them to take every opportunity to get experience and join training courses.

After finding out a bit more about the live-in care role, Debbie decided it was just the job for her as a new kind of care work she had not turned her hand to before. She took the decision to apply.

Welcome to Agincare

Debbie’s extensive skills, training and experience shone out at interview. After completing an Agincare training and induction course she upped sticks and made the move south to secure a live-in care job based in Bournemouth.  Three and half years later, Debbie has just completed that placement after her client sadly passed away.

Debbie said:

Live-in care was new for me and it took a little while to adjust. You have to accept the person as they are, respect their home and space whilst taking care of all their personal needs and providing high quality professional care.

But the caring mindset is the same as for any care job I have ever had. You are the person looking after someone’s mum or dad. You have to deliver the kind of care and support you would want and expect for your own relative if they were looked after.

Debbie grew close to her client in their time together. She also formed close bonds with the client’s family who were living in Spain, keeping them in touch and providing peace of mind. Debbie has grown to truly enjoy her job, and has no regrets about her career shift to live-in care work, saying:

I love working with Agincare. I get lots of support of all kinds. My supervisor is always at the end of the phone and I’ve never felt left out on my own. I would recommend it.
