If you’ve got the heart, then a our care manager job could be just the ticket for you.
How can we help?
That’s the first thing our Domiciliary Care Manager Filipe always asks when he meets a new client.
14 years ago Filipe started as care worker in our Weymouth team. Since then, with Agincare’s support, and thanks to his own incredible work ethic, engaging personality and infectious positivity, Filipe has risen through the ranks.
Filipe is dual CQC registered manager of our domiciliary care offices in Bridport and Dorchester, as well as of our extra care services for residents of Trailway Court in Blandford. You could do the same. Bring your personal qualities and we’ll provide all the training you need.
Filipe is one of the amazing care workers that featured in our recruitment campaign that encourages people to build a career in care. He says:
Care is a vocation. The technical skills can be taught but the heart for care, you either have it or you don’t, you can’t teach empathy and compassion.
I left the army age 19 with no idea what I wanted to do with my life. So I decided to travel, which I did for 2 years. I knew I wanted to work with people, just wasn’t sure how.
Filipe has always possessed the heart to care on a journey which has taken him fresh-faced from Setubal, near Lisbon in Portugal, to Dorset in England by the way of Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland and Holland.
After arriving in London, Filipe studied counselling at University College London whilst working for a cleaning company in the city. He also worked as an outreach worker for Action on Addiction. He counselled people with food disorders, addressing stigma and mis-understanding around conditions such as Anorexia and Bulimia.
Filipe excelled at his job and was rewarded with a role at a large treatment centre that Action on Addiction had won the tender for on the Wiltshire and Dorset border, splitting his time between the project and duties in London. But with the greater responsibility came paperwork and increasing distance from the people Filipe has a passion for meeting and supporting face to face.
Filipe’s destiny was set into motion after he joined a training course at Weymouth College. He liked the area and decided to move to Weymouth permanently after a friend, Francesca, explained there were care jobs in the company where she worked – Agincare.
The rest, as they say, is history. Filipe has completed diplomas levels 2, 3 and 5 in Health and Social Care and hopes he can apply for a level 7 diploma – equivalent to a degree. All were completed on the job whilst he progressed to senior carer, field care supervisor, deputy manager and Care Quality Commission registered manager. Filipe takes up the story…
One day an Agincare director came into the Weymouth office and encouraged me to apply for the vacant deputy manager’s job. I got the job and no less than six months later I was parachuted in as manager into our Bridport office, which needed a bit of help and extra support at the time.
I’m still manager at Bridport, but also manager for our Dorchester office and the team at Trailway Court in Blandford. I enjoy splitting my time between the teams, they’ve all got very different dynamics, strengths and weaknesses and I’m always learning from them.
Filipe employs the same Agincare values of supporting, encouraging and believing in his teams that he received on his journey through the organisation. He adds:
I’ve grown with Agincare over the last 14 years. It still feels very much like a family with the same strong values and culture, just a lot bigger.
You’ll always get fantastic support, praise and constructive comments with opportunities to progress if you want to get on and do well. You’re encouraged to believe in yourself and use your initiative as a leader.
Filipe still loves his job. He is happy doing what he is doing for now, but still has ambitions to progress even further in the future. And he knows he can with Agincare. Do you have a passion for care, and want a career where you can progress on your own merits?
