Direct payments

What are direct payments?

Direct payments are a great way to give you control over your care. Local authorities can arrange for individuals who need care services to receive funding to arrange their own care.
 
In order to receive a direct payment, an individual must first be assessed by their local authority to determine the level of care they need and must create a care plan, including a personal budget, which is agreed with the local authority.
 
A direct payment is given by the local authority to you, the person who requires the care, or to a person who you choose and trust to handle your finances if you are not able to do so yourself. The money you are given is what the local authority would have spent if they were to organise your care for you, it can then be used to pay for the type of care you choose.
 
If your personal budget does not cover the level or type of care you would prefer you can ‘top up’ the local authority contribution with your own funds and use that to pay for your choice of care e.g. live-in care.

Can I apply for a direct payment?

Yes if you:
 
  • Are aged 16+ and entitled to a community care service
  • Have parental responsibility for a disabled child under 16 who is entitled to a community care service
  • Are a carer aged 16 and or over and an assessment has decided you are entitled to a carer's service

How do I receive my direct payment?

  • Direct payments are put straight into your bank, Post Office, building society or National Savings and Investments account. The money given to you by the council must be used to pay for care services that have been agreed upon in your care plan, following your assessment with the local council.
