What is extra care housing?

Extra care is sometimes known as assisted living or sheltered housing.

This is when a resident owns, rents or part-rents their own purpose-built home within a scheme that provides communal spaces and care support for them.

Our services are commissioned by the local authorities and are available to people living at, or moving to, selected schemes.

If you have a tenancy at Brooke Mead in Brighton, you may be eligible for a personalised care plan with us.

Extra Care Housing Brooke Mead

Brooke Mead extra care housing

We know that retaining independence matters. That’s why, through our extra care housing schemes, we provide tailored support to help people manage their daily living needs.

Brooke Mead has 45 self-contained flats designed to help those needing support to live as independently as possible.

The development was the first extra care housing scheme to be built and managed by Brighton & Hove City Council and opened in 2018.

Life at Brooke Mead

At Brooke Mead, residents have their own home with their own furniture and possessions around them. Yet they also benefit from the added reassurance that help is on hand 24/7 if they need it.

Modelled on a mansion block, Brooke Mead has a communal entrance and reception which opens out into a vibrant garden. Other communal areas include a lounge, laundry room and social activities room.

Registered Manager for Brooke Mead, Sara Miller said:

The flats are beautiful and they all have balconies, underfloor heating and wet rooms. There is a lovely garden that the residents can use and the building is very well maintained. We consider it the jewel in the crown of senior housing.

The development is designed for people living with low to moderate dementia and other people who need care and support. However, Brooke Mead also provides independent and secure extra care housing for those who are likely to become more vulnerable over time.
