Care worker with Parkinson’s puts his best foot forward at the London Marathon

This year’s London Marathon saw more than 42,500 runners complete the 26.2-mile course, raising millions of pounds for charity. Among the entrants was Agincare care worker Stewart Lovatt from Herefordshire, who completed the course in 4 hours, 28 minutes, raising £4,750 for Parkinson’s UK.

Stewart said:

“In November 2014 I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s - a progressive neurological condition for which there is currently no cure. It was a shock - it brought tears to my eyes and it was a truly life-changing moment. Until then I had led a very active life and had served for 25 years in the Army. Sunday’s marathon was my first marathon since being diagnosed, and I was determined to raise as much money as possible to support Parkinson’s UK's pioneering research into the condition.

"My wife Hayley, family and friends, Agincare and Fortis Living colleagues and Rose Garden residents really pulled out the stops, helping me hold a fundraising fun day last month. I can’t thank them, Agincare and Parkinson’s UK enough for their support - it was an amazing day and added £1480 to the fundraising total.”

Agincare Leominster branch manager, Clare Dixon, said:

"Stewart has been a care worker at Agincare's Rose Garden Extra Care Scheme since December 2018, and has quickly become a respected and valued member of the team. So we were determined to do all we could to support his fundraising.

"The Rose Garden village hall was buzzing during the event. Highlights included an Easter-themed tombola, a raffle, craft table, manicures and nail painting, a huge game of bingo, and Stewart’s wife Hayley singing on the stage. One of the Rose Garden residents, who’d been living there for a few years, said it was the best day she had had since she had moved in! Congratulations to Stewart - completing the marathon and raising almost £5,000 for such a worthy cause is a fantastic achievement.”
