Care assistant job description

Some of your duties will include:

  • Personal care – help to get up or going to bed, washing, bathing, dressing and going to the toilet
  • Supervision of medication – overseeing when medication is taken (training will always be given according to the customer’s care plan)
  • Companionship – offering emotional support, making conversation, keeping one another company
  • Social interaction – including helping residents take part in leisure activities, games, and day trips

We place huge importance on getting to know our residents. Understanding their needs enables you to nurture your relationship with them, and this is the foundation of good care.

Care experience is not essential. If you have the passion to care for others, we will ensure you have the right training for your role.

Do you need experience to become a care assistant in a care home?

Experience is not essential as we offer successful candidates comprehensive training. It’s important that you have a desire to care for people and improve their quality of life. We expect good written and verbal English and strong communication skills.

What qualities does a care assistant need?

We are looking for caring and friendly people who are trustworthy, patient and kind, as well as being resourceful in their approach to caring for others. Often you will need to adapt to situations as they arise but we are here to support you and ensure you have all the backing you need to meet any challenges you may face. Ultimately, we need people who have a good heart.

What do care assistants in a care home do?

Our care home assistants provide practical support and care to residents. We pride ourselves is getting to know our residents and your role as a care assistant is really important to providing that level of personalised care. Responsibilities include washing, dressing and helping with everyday tasks like paying bills, as well as providing emotional support and companionship.

How flexible is the work of a care assistant?

Working as a care assistant offers flexible hours that fits around your lifestyle. There are full time and part-time roles and hours can be tailored to the days and times that you are available for work.

How much do care assistants get paid?

Can you work in a care home without a DBS?

No, because all roles in our care homes have the opportunity to have regular contact with the adult residents living there, an enhanced DBS check is essential.

Do I have to pay for my DBS?

No, Agincare will pay for your DBS check.

What is the recruitment process to work in a care home?

The first step towards working in the care sector for Agincare is to use our job search functionality to find the job type most relevant to your experience and interests. Once you have applied online, one of our recruitment team will call you back for a telephone interview. The next step is for pre-employment checks including enhanced DBS and two references. Finally you will be invited to a two-day assessment course and then a paid induction course. You are then hired!

What kind of career progression is available through care home Jobs?

The first role on the ladder as a care worker is as a care assistant, for which no experience is needed as full training is provided. Once you have some experience in this role and have gained relevant care sector qualifications, more senior job types are available including senior care assistants, nurses and care managers.

Can I work in a care home with no qualifications?

Qualifications and experience are not essential for care assistant job types as we offer successful candidates free training. We do however need all candidates to have a high standard of written and spoken English and strong communication skills. It’s also important that you have a desire to care for people and improve their quality of life.

Can you work in a care home without a degree?

Yes, a degree is not essential for most care sector jobs. When using our job search functionality, you will see the requirements for each role.

Do I need to be a qualified nurse to work in a nursing home?

No, there are many other jobs available in our nursing homes including care assistants, chefs, kitchen assistants and activity co-ordinators. When using our job search functionality, you will see the requirements for each role.
