Admiral Nursing

Admiral Nurses are mental health nurses specialising in dementia care, working collaboratively with health and social care professionals to improve the experiences of those affected by dementia.

Admiral Nurses offer support for family carers and people with dementia, which entails comprehensive assessment of need and provision of a range of therapeutic approaches designed to promote emotional well being and equip family carers with skills and information

Admiral Nursing was established as a result of the experiences of family carers. Admiral Nurses are named after Joseph Levy who had vascular dementia and was known as “Admiral Joe” due to his keen interest in sailing.

Dementia UK is a national charity which works in partnership with the NHS, local authorities and other organisations to promote and develop Admiral Nursing and to support the practice of Admiral Nurses. Jo Palmer is Consultant Admiral Nurse at Agincare and provides additional support to family carers, care workers and staff and the people receiving a service who are living with dementia.

The Consultant Admiral Nurse role is the first of its kind in the country and Admiral Nursing itself is new to the private care industry as most Admiral Nurses are employed by the NHS or by charitable organisations.

Working collaboratively across boundaries with partner providers of health and social care, Jo provides strategic, professional, clinical leadership and consultancy in care and nursing practice throughout Agincare Services. Continuing also with her contribution to Quality Management Jo continues to influence training and education programs to increase awareness and promote best practice in dementia care throughout Agincare’s care homes and community teams.

As Consultant Admiral Nurse and Quality Lead for Agincare, Jo takes a lead role in maximising the contribution that values and evidence based practice makes to Agincare’s:

  • Expert clinical practice
  • Professional leadership and consultancy
  • Education, training and research
  • Practice and service development and evaluation
